With our network of over 200 volunteers, we welcome refugees and people seeking asylum across Hertfordshire. We offer practical support including befriending and English lessons. Refugees We support resettled refugees across the county. They need help with getting to know their new community - understanding paperwork, school, and other aspects of UK life. We match refugees with befrienders and English tutors. Asylum seekers We support people seeking asylum who are living in hotels/hostels or dispersed accommodation. We signpost sources of support and our volunteers run drop-in sessions offering English classes, a listening and advice service and a range of other activities. Our support carries on once asylum seekers are given leave to remain as they are then faced with having to find work and accommodation in a very short space of time. Some of the problems facing refugees and asylum seekers include: Navigating life in the UK: new arrivals face barriers to integration due to limited financial means, lack of English and knowledge of UK systems. Our befrienders help new arrivals settle into their local community. We match people with English tutors, either online or face-to-face and run English classes for groups. We signpost them to college and school places and also give out donated bikes and help supply shoes and school uniforms. Mental wellbeing: many asylum seekers have fled war and left everything behind. They are not allowed to work, they often live in cramped hotel rooms with nowhere for children to play or study. When individuals are given leave to remain, they are likely to face homelessness. These traumatic situations can lead to depression and anxiety. Our volunteers run art classes, homework clubs, playgroups and cookery sessions. We give out SIM cards so people can communicate with the Home Office and speak to their loved ones. We signpost new refugees to other agencies for housing and employment advice.
