The non-profit NGO „Hilfsaktion Noma e.V.“ (HAN) was founded in 1994 by teacher Ute Winkler-Stumpf as a school project in Regensburg, Germany. Since then, HAN has become the world's largest aid organization in the fight against noma and is following a holistic approach: its activities range from supporting scientific research, awareness-raising and prevention to the treatment, education and social re-integration of patients. In Niger, HAN operates a hospital for the treatment of noma patients; four children's homes for the pre- and post-treatment of patients; a nutrition center and (in cooperation with the Ministry of Health of Niger) a nutrition clinic for the in-patient treatment of severely malnourished children. A training center offers capacity building for medical staff from Niger and neighbouring countries. In Guinea-Bissau, HAN has set up a second hospital and a children's home. In Nigeria, HAN financed the Noma Centre Abuja that’s operated by Noma Aid Nigeria Initiative (NANI). So far, HAN managed to offer reconstructive surgery to 4,500 children; Over 72,500 children were vaccinated; and over 95,000 children were brought to normal weight. In cooperation with the WHO, HAN supports national action programs against Noma in Guinea-Bissau, Ethiopia, Mozambique, Niger, Nigeria and Senegal and funds other noma projects as well (e.g. of other NGOs committed to fight noma). HAN has also funded the first WHO medical manual on how to treat noma. The HAN works exclusively through private donations.
