De Stichting Stadskanaal Rail (STAR, beter bekend als Museumspoorlijn STAR) is in juni 1992 opgericht met als doel het behoud van de spoorlijn Veendam – Stadskanaal – Musselkanaal. Deze spoorlijn stond destijds op de nominatie om gesloopt te worden. Sinds de oprichting van de STAR is er door de vrijwilligers hard gewerkt aan de totstandkoming van de museumspoorlijn.
