In 1982, Pandora Film was founded by Reinhard Brundig and Karl „Baumi" Baumgartner in Frankfurt as a production company and a distributor. What began as a project of two firm enthusiasts turned out to become a great success story in the 1980s and 1990s when Pandora Film became one of the biggest and most renowned independent distributors in Germany - always aiming at getting a wide audience enthusiastic about their national and international arthouse productions. Reinhard Brundig und Karl „Baumi“ Baumgartner managed to work together on a long-term basis with the most important directors of international independent cinema at the time such as Aki Kaurismäki („The Man without a Past“), Jim Jarmusch („Only Lovers left Alive“), Bent Hamer („Factotum“) or Emir Kusturica („Black cat, white cat“). Pandora Film celebrated its biggest success in the years after its foundation when Jane Campion won the Palme d’Or in Cannes for her film THE PIANO in 1993 and when Emir Kusturicas won the Palme d’Or for UNDERGROUND in 1995. THE PIANO turned out on of the most successful films in the history of Pandora Film: 2 Min. people saw the drama in German cinemas in 1993. Another success story of Pandora Film was SOUL KITCHEN by the German director Fatih Akın with 1.3 Mio. moviegoers when the film was released in German in 2009. Every year, Pandora Film releases 5-6 selected films. The distributor is known for its individual, exceptional Marketing and PR campaigns - and for his continuous, intensive work with national and international directors such as Andreas Dresen („From Hilde, with love"), Christian Schwochow („Je suis Karl“, „Paula“), Terrence Malick („A Hidden Life“) or Lukas Dhont („Close“).
