Research shows training in the Traditional Martial Arts is not only an effective therapeutic tool for recovery from violence, it is also a powerful weapon in violence prevention. We remove financial barriers to accessing the training for women in need by providing them with a one year Pink Belt Scholarship at their nearest local martial arts club. To date, with almost no funding support, we have recruited martial arts clubs in every Australian State and Territory to provide Pink Belt Scholarships – a year of free martial arts training in her local area for a woman in need. The physical training is supported with a printed handbook, online positive mindset workshop, connection to other recipients and mentoring by former recipients. We have upskilled the club instructors in trauma-informed practice for enhanced outcomes, created training environments that are safe and welcoming for all, plus delivered close to 200 scholarships with some life-changing outcomes. As a result of their scholarships, our Recipients have gone on to become instructors in their own rights, start new jobs, buy new homes, develop new social networks and heal their trauma. These outcomes reflect international sociological research on the transformative power of martial arts for women. Now with the support of a generous benefactor, we are scaling up our work and impact, determined to grow our network of Pink Belt Supporter Clubs and raise community awareness about the powerful potential of martial arts for good.
