At Ryan Investments, we are wealth managers focused on helping our clients with estate planning, asset allocation, philanthropy, and especially portfolio management. Our investment philosophy is based on evidenced-based, academic research combined with real life experience about what investors really want: growth & protection. Most good portfolio managers start off fine, focusing on an investor's objectives and risk tolerance to determine an asset allocation plan. Then they'll complete the plan, selecting individual securities, active funds or passive index funds. But almost all portfolio managers then "buy & hold" their portfolio through all cycles and endure significant volatility and drawdowns. At best, they’ll match the markets, both up and down. With increased volatility and risk in today’s markets, that’s no longer good enough. Investors can't actually handle the drawdown losses that are inherent in a buy & hold strategy. Consider the math: a 30% loss takes a 43% gain to break even. Clearly, risk management matters as much as growth.
