The Sentencing Council was created to promote greater transparency and consistency in sentencing, while maintaining the independence of the judiciary. Our primary, statutory role is to develop sentencing guidelines, which the courts must follow unless it is in the interests of justice not to do so. The Council must also: • monitor how guidelines are used • assess the impact of guidelines on sentencing practice, and • promote public confidence in sentencing There are 14 members of the Council: 8 judicial and 6 non-judicial, representing policing, prosecution, defence, probation, academia and victims. The Council is supported by a small civil-service team of policy, legal, analytical and communication professionals in the Office of the Sentencing Council.
