We are the only specialist domestic abuse service in Shetland. We provide a variety of support to women subjected to abuse by a partner or ex-partner, and can help with both current and historical abuse. We have an IDAA (Independent Domestic Abuse Advocate) team which deal with "high risk" cases involving MARAC (Multi-Agency Risk Assessment Conference) and can support women to create safety plans and liaise with law enforcement where appropriate. We have a support team who use a holistic approach to assist women with a variety of needs; housing applications, job applications, therapeutic techniques and coping strategies, confidence building, advocacy, etc. We have three qualified trauma therapists, all registered with the BACP, who can use a variety of approaches to support clients to process their trauma and better understand what has happened to them. Techniques include EFT and EMDR. Our Children and Young People's team provide support to children of all genders affected by domestic abuse, family breakdown, and substance use. We also support looked after children. Within the CYP team we have an accredited Play and Creative Arts Therapist. We can provide temporary accommodation for women and their children, and have a refuge (safe house) with a dedicated support worker. We can also support women and their children to leave Shetland safely, finding accommodation on the mainland. We provide a variety of education and training to local schools and businesses on topics such as domestic abuse and coercive control. SWA also sits on Shetland's Domestic Abuse Partnership, informing local policy and procedures in regard to VAWG services.
