SMU PGRI Cibinong berdiri atau mulai menerima siswa baru pada tahun pelajaran 1978/1979 atas instruksi Kepala Kantor Depdikbud Kabupaten Bogor (Drs. E. Djarkasih), untuk menampung lulusan SMP yang tidak tertampung oleh SMA Negeri Cibinong. Kegiatan belajar mengajar (KBM) menggunakan ruang kelas milik SMA Negeri Cibinong termasuk guru-gurunya. Jumlah siswa angkatan pertama adalah 35 orang, sebagai pejabat kepala sekolah di tunjuk Drs. E. Sanusi Pr (Alm) yang ketika itu sebagai wakil kepala sekolah SMA Negeri Cibinong, dan berakhir tanggal 31 Desember 1980. Pada tanggal 20 Desember 1980 Mendapat pengesahan pengurus Yayasan Persekolahan PGRI Daerah V Jawa Barat, dengan Surat Keputusan No. 052/YP-PGRI/V/Kpt/1980. Sedangkan izin pendidikan dari Kanwil Depdikbud Propinsi Jawa Barat pada tanggal 22 Februari 1982 dengan Surat Keputusan No. 4/I02/Kep/E.82.
