The Sotiria Thoracic Diseases General Hospital of Athens was founded by Sophia Schliemann in 1902 as the first sanatorium in Greece. Since then, it has become closely associated with the treatment of pulmonary tuberculosis and other respiratory diseases in the country. The facilities were expanded in the 1930s, alongside a significant upgrade in the healthcare services provided, while the first Tuberculosis Clinic of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens was also later established there. From the 1950s onward, the hospital gradually evolved into a comprehensive diagnostic and therapeutic centre for all respiratory diseases, while also establishing Greece’s first centre dedicated to the management of respiratory failure. Today, what began as a small early 20th-century sanatorium is recognised as the largest respiratory medical referral centre in Greece and one of the largest in Europe. At the same time, it has progressively developed into a general hospital, following the integration of medical and surgical clinics from both the National Health Service and the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens.
