Theater building in Toruń was erected in 1904 by two architects from Vienna – Ferinand Fellner and Hermann Helmer. Upon regaining sovereignty in 1920, the theater established itself as a seat of professional Polish ensemble as The National Theater in Toruń. During the post war years the theater was managed by Wilam Horzyca, one of the most outstanding directors in Poland, a promoter of Polish Theater Reformation. In 1960 the theater was honored with the Wilam Horzyca name. On the initiative of managing director Hugon Moryciński in 1959 the first annual North Poland Theater Festival was held. This festival was the longest running annual event of its kind in Poland and was last held in 1989. The second well known theater festival started in Toruń in 1991, when the managing director was, since season 1983/84, Krystyna Meissner. International Theater Festival Kontakt was her idea. Festival was the first one after régime transformation in Poland, but also the first international meeting In Central and Eastern Europe, confronting the theatre ensembles from East and West. Since 1997 the managing director of theater and ITF Kontakt has been Jadwiga Oleradzka. Under her and artistic directorship of Iwona Kempa (since 2006) in repertoire dominate contemporary plays. They are directing also by good known artists from Poland and Europe (belongs of them are laureates of Kontakt, invited by us to such cooperation) and by very young directors, especially on our small stage.
