Founded in 1631, as watch and clockmaking was beginning to flourish in London, the Clockmakers' Company remains a champion of excellence in a global trade that is moving from strength to strength. As one of the City's Livery Companies, today, the Company's activities range from supporting education and skills to inspiring the public through its world-class museum housed at the Science Museum, London, part of the world’s leading alliance of science museums. It is also at the heart of industry networks, offering members access to expertise and opportunities across the world. The Company still maintains the spirit of its original 1631 charter, with members now drawn from a diverse field that includes watch and clockmakers, designers, collectors, maintainers, conservators, researchers, hand engravers, retailers and dealers – or anyone with a close involvement with horology. As a networking organization, the Company brings together the widest group of horological specialisms. But it offers much more in support. Its library and archive, held at the historic Guildhall Library in London, is of international significance. It supports and promotes horological education and training through grants, prizes and mentoring. And it will always fly the flag for an industry that is flourishing root and branch. The Clockmakers' Charity makes grants to horological education, both institutions and individuals, supports apprentices and mentoring throughout the world of horology, and to the maintenance and conservation of public clocks of note within the City of London and the wider UK.
