Job Overview We are seeking an experienced Senior Bookkeeper – Construction (Simpro/Xero) to support an Australian construction business by managing the full bookkeeping function from end to end with minimal supervision. This role is ideal for a detail-oriented professional with extensive Australian bookkeeping experience, strong expertise in Xero and Simpro, and a proven ability to deliver accurate month-end reporting, maintain financial integrity, and provide meaningful financial insights.

The successful candidate will take ownership of bookkeeping operations while ensuring compliance, accuracy, and continuous process improvement.

Key Responsibilities

Manage the complete bookkeeping function from end to end with minimal supervision. Perform full balance sheet, bank, and general ledger reconciliations. Identify and correct coding, GST, and reconciliation discrepancies. Process accruals, prepayments, payroll liabilities, and month-end close activities. Prepare accurate financial records ready for BAS lodgement and accountant review.

Maintain complete and accurate financial records and reconciliations. Manage bookkeeping functions using Xero, Simpro, and payroll systems (Employment Hero or similar). Support construction-specific financial processes, including: Simpro workflows and job costing Work in Progress (WIP) Project costing and profitability analysis Progress claims Supplier reconciliations Construction-specific financial reporting Produce accurate monthly management reports and analyze financial performance.

Identify financial issues, investigate root causes, and provide recommendations. Support business decision-making through timely and accurate financial reporting. Communicate effectively with clients and internal stakeholders. Take ownership of bookkeeping processes while continuously improving accuracy and efficiency.

Requirements

Qualifications Minimum 5+ years of bookkeeping experience. Proven experience supporting Australian businesses. Strong knowledge of: GST BAS preparation Australian payroll obligations Construction industry experience is essential. Advanced proficiency in Xero. Hands-on experience with Simpro (essential). Experience using payroll systems such as Employment Hero or similar.

Intermediate to advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel. Demonstrated ability to: Complete balance sheet, bank, and general ledger reconciliations Manage month-end close accurately and on time Prepare clean files for BAS lodgement and accountant review Analyze financial performance and provide actionable insights Strong written and verbal English communication skills.

Confident communicating with clients and internal stakeholders. Ability to explain financial issues, identify root causes, recommend solutions, and escalate when appropriate. Proactive, solutions-focused, highly accurate, and able to work independently with minimal supervision while taking full ownership of the bookkeeping function.
