Job description
This role serves as a senior member of a Japan-based intellectual property team within a global life sciences organization. The position plays a key role in shaping and executing international IP strategy, working closely with R&D, product strategy, and global stakeholders to protect and maximize the value of innovative medical technologies.
Key Responsibilities
Lead and contribute to the development and execution of global IP strategies aligned with business objectives. Manage and strengthen an international patent and trademark portfolio across multiple jurisdictions. Partner with R&D and product teams on invention mining, patentability assessments, and filing strategies. Support freedom-to-operate analysis, competitive intelligence, and IP risk management.
Contribute to IP-related transactions, including licensing, collaborations, and partnered product evaluations. Coordinate with external counsel and global IP teams on prosecution, disputes, and strategic initiatives. Present IP strategy, risks, and recommendations to senior management in Japan and internationally.
Requirements
Extensive experience in intellectual property strategy, patent prosecution, and IP transactions within life sciences or related industries. Active patent attorney qualification (Japan or equivalent). Strong understanding of patent systems and IP considerations for regulated products. Ability to operate effectively in a global, cross-cultural environment.
High-level communication skills in English; Japanese proficiency required for Japan-based collaboration. Strategic mindset with the ability to influence decision-making at senior levels.
Nice to Have
Experience with medical devices, pharmaceuticals, or advanced therapeutic technologies. Exposure to IP management systems or analytics tools. Experience supporting M&A, alliances, or complex partnership structures.
