Job description

We are seeking a compassionate and dedicated Orientation & Mobility (O&M) Specialist to provide services within a school setting in Carlsbad, New Mexico. This is a part-time, in-person opportunity supporting students who are blind or visually impaired by teaching safe travel skills, independent navigation, environmental awareness, and mobility techniques that promote success both inside and outside the classroom.

  • 7–10 Hours per Week Job Responsibilities:
  • Conduct orientation and mobility evaluations for students with visual impairments
  • Develop individualized O&M plans aligned with IEP goals
  • Teach safe travel skills, cane techniques, environmental awareness, and independent navigation
  • Collaborate with Teachers of the Visually Impaired (TVIs), educators, parents, and related service providers
  • Participate in IEP meetings and contribute to student goal development
  • Maintain accurate documentation and progress reports
  • Provide consultation regarding accessibility and environmental modifications Requirements
  • Active Orientation & Mobility Specialist (COMS/ACVREP) certification or state equivalent
  • Current New Mexico PED (Public Education Department) Certification required
  • New Mexico licensure required
  • Candidates licensed in another state are encouraged to apply. Expedited New Mexico licensure may be completed in approximately 2–4 weeks
