Purpose of the Position The Responsible Pharmacist is accountable for the lawful, safe, and ethical operation of the pharmacy, ensuring full compliance with all applicable pharmacy legislation, professional standards, and regulatory requirements.
Key Responsibilities
Regulatory Compliance Ensure the pharmacy operates in accordance with all applicable legislation and professional rules Maintain pharmacy licensing, registrations, and statutory records Ensure proper storage, control, and security of medicines and scheduled substances Implement and maintain standard operating procedures Ensure compliance with Good Pharmacy Practice standards Professional Pharmacy Practice Accurately dispense prescriptions and verify medication safety Provide patient counselling and pharmaceutical care Ensure appropriate supervision of pharmacy support personnel Monitor and prevent medication errors Maintain confidentiality of patient information Operational Management Oversee daily pharmacy operations Ensure adequate stock control and inventory management Monitor expiry dates, recalls, and storage conditions Maintain a safe and hygienic pharmacy environment Ensure proper record keeping for scheduled medicines Staff Supervision Supervise pharmacists, interns, and pharmacy support staff Ensure staff compliance with pharmacy procedures Provide professional guidance and training Ensure lawful scope of practice for all staff Quality Assurance and Risk Management Implement quality control and risk management systems Investigate and report dispensing errors or incidents Ensure safe handling and disposal of medicines Ensure compliance with health and safety requirements Authority The Responsible Pharmacist has authority to: Enforce pharmacy procedures and professional standards Restrict or stop unsafe practices Ensure compliance with legal and ethical requirements Oversee control of medicines and pharmacy records Working Conditions Full-time position, 45 hours/week Retail pharmacy trading hours, including Saturdays when required High level of professional accountability Performance Standards Evaluated on: Regulatory compliance Accuracy and safety of dispensing Operational efficiency Professional conduct Patient care standards Requirements Minimum Requirements Bachelor of Pharmacy degree or equivalent Registered Pharmacist in good standing with SAPC Experience in retail pharmacy practice Knowledge of pharmacy legislation and regulatory requirements Strong ethical and professional conduct
