Job description

Overview

The Surgical Services Aide will maintain a positive physical appearance of the unit by carrying out a variety of supportive tasks. He/She provides assistance with patients and visitors under the direction of the Registered Nurse. The Unit Aide demonstrates excellent customer service. He/She upholds the standards contained in the Vision, Mission and Values of Covenant, and commits to Keeping our Promise of Caring.

Responsibilities

Contributes to organization success targets for net operating margin. Models Covenant’s Mission, Vision and Values of keeping our Promise of Caring and Commitment to Service. Has social contact with patients, and is able to appropriately assess, care for and treat them according to the guidelines as defined by Covenant HealthCare.

Demonstrates excellent customer service. Maintains safe, clean work areas in storage rooms, OR rooms and work area. Assesses malfunctioning beds, stretchers and lights and initiates repair order to Engineering when unable to correct the problem. Empties soiled linen bags. Removes linens from stretchers/beds. Acts as back-up secretary, answers telephones, covers lunch and breaks for HUC.

Performs in-unit and unit-to-unit transfers to appropriate patients. Other duties as assigned. Daily and weekly terminal cleaning of unit. Room turnover. Transports medications, equipment, blood, specimens and patients. Cleans and processes scopes and eye instruments Assists OR staff by holding patients using sterile technique.

Qualifications

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

  • High School Graduate or equivalent
  • BLS Heartsaver required within 90 days of hire.
  • Medical/Surgical experience preferred. KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES
  • Basic computer skills in certain Surgical Services areas.
  • Understanding of sterile technique and O.R. protocol in certain areas.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Excellent problem solving and analytical skills.
  • Strong Customer Service skills.
  • Strong Communication skills.
  • Sound judgment in handling confidential or sensitive issues and material.
  • Excellent time management to achieve maximum productivity.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Ability to motivate and precept new employees. WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS Constant standing, walking. Frequent lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, twisting, reaching, handling, finger dexterity, feeling, talking, hearing, near vision, midrange vision, far vision, depth perception, visual accommodation, color vision, field of vision. Frequent lifting up to 25 lbs. Occasional sitting, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, squatting. Occasional lifting up to 50 lbs.
