Job description

Summary: The Agronomist plays a critical role in driving the success of cassava production on the farm by overseeing all agronomic operations to ensure optimal crop performance, high yields, and sustainable farming practices. This position is responsible for developing and executing comprehensive agronomic strategies, from land preparation to harvest, while ensuring adherence to best practices in soil health, pest and disease management, and crop nutrition.

The Agronomist will lead field teams, provide technical training to staff and farmers, and support research and innovation through field trials and data-driven decision-making. By monitoring crop development, analyzing performance metrics, and aligning operations with environmental and safety standards, the Agronomist ensures continuous improvement in productivity, quality, and operational efficiency.

This role is essential to achieving the farm’s production targets and advancing sustainable cassava farming practices.

Responsibilities

Develop and implement integrated cassava production plans and agronomic strategies. Monitor and supervise all stages of crop production, including land preparation, planting, maintenance, and harvesting. Conduct regular soil analysis and recommend tailored soil fertility and nutrient management programs. Oversee fertilizer application and other crop nutrition initiatives to optimize plant health and yield.

Identify, monitor, and manage pests, diseases, and weeds using integrated pest management (IPM) approaches. Promote the adoption of improved cassava varieties and proven agronomic best practices. Provide technical guidance, training, and on-the-ground support to field officers, farm staff, and partner farmers. Track crop growth stages and maintain accurate, up-to-date farm records and performance reports.

Ensure compliance with agricultural, environmental, and occupational safety standards. Support irrigation planning and water use efficiency strategies where applicable. Analyze farm performance data to identify trends, challenges, and opportunities for yield improvement. Coordinate field trials, demonstration plots, and research activities to evaluate new practices and technologies.

Monitor weather patterns and provide timely advisories to management on potential production risks. Collaborate with farm management to meet production targets and enhance operational efficiency. Prepare and deliver regular agronomic reports and performance updates for senior leadership.
