Spring 2027 Mechatronics Engineering Co-op
Job description
The Mechatronics Engineering Co-op will support the SCOOP team by developing and maintaining controls for mechanical test fixtures used in cycle, endurance, and reliability testing. Working closely with mechanical, electrical, quality, and systems engineers, the co-op will select and integrate controls hardware, develop PLC programs, troubleshoot electromechanical systems, and implement tools for monitoring test performance and failures.
This role will be onsite at the Bedford, MA office. This position will run from approximately January to June 2027 (dates flexible). Functions: Support PLC development and troubleshooting for automated systems, including debugging ladder logic, structured text, and I/O issues. Assist in commissioning and validation of automation systems, including sensors, conveyors, and robotic subsystems.
Develop and improve diagnostic tools for identifying electrical and control system faults. Collaborate with cross-functional teams to improve system reliability, uptime, and performance. Troubleshoot electrical and control system issues, including wiring faults, sensor failures, and communication errors. Assist in integration and testing of hardware components such as PLCs, drives, and safety systems.
Modify and test PLC programs to support new features and system updates. Build test setups to validate control logic and hardware functionality. Support root cause analysis (RCA) for system failures and help implement corrective actions. Read and interpret electrical schematics to support debugging and system bring-up.
Assist with panel wiring, labeling, and verification. Document system behavior, issues, and solutions to improve team knowledge and processes.
