This position offers hands-on experience across a wide variety of accounting disciplines, making it an ideal opportunity for an ambitious accounting professional seeking to develop a well-rounded finance career. Working under the general direction of the Director of Finance, the Accountant helps maintain accurate financial records, ensures compliance with financial regulations, supports employee pension programs, and contributes to the Township's overall financial operations.
What You'll Do
General Accounting Prepare journal entries and maintain the general ledger Reconcile accounts and investigate discrepancies Maintain fixed asset records Assist with year-end closing and annual audits Prepare financial analyses, schedules, and reports Recommend process improvements and internal controls Payroll Accounting Prepare payroll-related journal entries Reconcile payroll expenditures, liabilities, and taxes Assist with payroll reporting and quarterly filings Business Tax Administration Monitor and identify businesses subject to local taxation Support tax compliance and collection efforts Coordinate with tax collectors, auditors, and legal agencies Maintain tax administration records Pension Administration Assist with administration of employee pension plans Prepare preliminary pension calculations Process enrollments and participant changes Coordinate with consultants and plan administrators Reconcile pension contributions and records Banking & Cash Management Process cash receipts and remote deposits Reconcile bank accounts Assist with banking transactions and investment analysis Regulatory Reporting Prepare sales tax and alternative fuels tax filings Assist with governmental reporting requirements Customer Service & Administrative Support Respond to inquiries from employees, residents, vendors, auditors, and government agencies Assist customers with financial transactions Maintain confidential information Support special projects and departmental initiatives What We're Looking For Education Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Business Administration, Finance, or a related field preferred Equivalent education and experience may be considered Experience Recent graduates and early-career accountants are encouraged to apply Two to four years of accounting experience preferred Governmental accounting experience is a plus, but not required Skills and Qualifications Strong understanding of accounting principles Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities Strong attention to detail and organization Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook, and financial software systems Ability to communicate effectively with a wide variety of stakeholders Commitment to confidentiality, accuracy, and public service Build Your Career While Serving Your Community This position provides a unique opportunity to gain exposure to virtually every aspect of municipal finance while enjoying the stability, benefits, and work-life balance that public service offers.
