Job description

About the role

The AMB System Engineer is responsible for system-level design and integration of Active Magnetic Bearings (AMB) in Flywheel Energy Storage Systems (FESS). The role focuses on 2 complementary aspects: 1- Simulate, predict and ensure the AMB fiufils its role in term of active guiding of the high speed rotor. 2- A deep understanding of AMB principles to define requirements for suppliers selection.

What you'll do

Define system-level requirements (Force, operating frequency, speed, energy density, lifetime, losses) using state of the art simulation tools (rotor dynamics, Matlab-simulink co simulation ect.) Translate system-level requirements (Force, frequency, speed, energy density, lifetime, losses) into actionable AMB specifications (load capacity, stiffness, bandwidth, redundancy, control interfaces), and define clear technical specifications and interface requirements.

Participate to technical communication and reviews with AMB suppliers; identify key parameters and hidden risks in supplier solutions (e.g., insufficient stability margins, overstated bandwidth, poor thermal design); avoid black-box dependency and maintain clear understanding of design assumptions and performance limits.

Participate to system integration of AMB with rotor, motor, control system, and vacuum enclosure; resolve cross-domain coupling issues (rotor dynamics, control stability, structural vibration, thermal management), ensuring optimal system performance. Participate in system testing and commissioning; analyze vibration, losses, and stability issues; perform technical root cause analysis and correlation with Simulation models.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering; background in rotor dynamics or/and electromagnetics preferred. Experience in AMB, electric machines, or high-speed rotating systems; system integration or cross-functional experience preferred. Solid understanding of AMB fundamentals (force-current relationship, stiffness, control bandwidth) and rotor dynamics; ability to critically review and challenge supplier documentation (simulation reports, test data); basic modeling skills (FEA/MATLAB/Simulink/C/Python) for independent validation.

Strong system-level thinking and engineering judgment; able to make decisions under uncertainty; effective communicator with both suppliers and internal teams Fluent in both written and spoken Chinese and English; able to use English as a working language for daily communication (including email correspondence with overseas colleagues, conference calls, and receiving foreign visitors).

Personal Attributes Excellent communication, coordination, and interpersonal skills with a strong service orientation. High sense of responsibility and initiative; able to handle multiple tasks independently. Detail-oriented, well-organized, with excellent problem-solving skills and resilience under pressure. Proactive and positive personality with a strong team spirit Qnetic was founded with the mission to enable the transition to clean, sustainable energy.

To achieve it, we are developing a high-performance energy storage system for the electric grid, based on new flywheel technology. It delivers ‘energy shifting’ at a lower cost than anything we know about. Compared to lithium-ion batteries, Qnetic has 3x the lifetime, 2x the discharge duration, 0.5x the cost and 0x the degradation.

We’re building something fundamentally different — and we’re looking for people who are driven to solve hard challenges, do meaningful work, and make a real impact on the future of energy.
