We’re actively seeking a Ventures Analyst to champion the Plug and Play business model and drive portfolio growth across our global Energy platform. An ideal candidate has a passion for energy, climate, cleantech, sustainability, deep tech, and emerging technologies, is eager to understand how startups scale, and is driven to take an active role in building out our ecosystem and investment portfolio.
Candidates with an engineering or technical background and exposure to oil & gas, electric utilities, power systems, or other energy sectors are especially encouraged to apply. The Ventures Analyst role is a key entry-level position on the Ventures Team. Analysts support Associates and Investment Partners and are responsible for sourcing relevant startups and supporting deal teams on new investments.
Analysts also work with corporate partners on their technology needs and support overall program management. HOW YOU WILL MAKE A DIFFERENCE: Sourcing New Startups Source startups that are relevant for the Energy vertical program and other vertical-agnostic opportunities for investment. Identify emerging technologies across energy, climate, deep tech, industrial technologies, electricity infrastructure, and advanced materials.
Attend calls or meetings with relevant companies. Build and maintain strong relationships with local VCs, universities, corporations, research institutions, founders, and industry stakeholders. Actively network with startup founders at industry events and conferences. Ventures Program Management Schedule and facilitate deal flow meetings between startups and corporate partners, mainly electric utilities, oil & gas companies, chemical manufacturers, EPC firms, and other energy and industrial corporations.
Curate startup lists for corporate partners based on their technology interests. Maintain relationships with industry partners. Create trend reports and presentations on energy, oil & gas industry, electricity and grid technologies, deep tech, advanced materials, and other emerging technology areas based on corporate partner interests.
Perform additional operational work for Plug and Play Ventures as needed. Diligence / Investment Research Work closely with Investment Partners throughout the full investment lifecycle, including conducting diligence, developing investment recommendations, and supporting portfolio companies. Develop investment theses regarding emerging trends and frontiers within energy, climate, deep tech, and industrial technology through deep research and market mapping.
Evaluate startup technologies, markets, business models, competitive landscapes, and technical differentiation. REQUIRED EXPERIENCE: Bachelor’s degree required. A degree in engineering, science, technology, energy, or another quantitative discipline is a plus. Background or experience working or interning on energy-related projects.
An engineering background, including Electrical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Petroleum Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, or a related discipline to the energy industry, is a plus. A Master’s degree or other advanced degree is a plus. Knowledge of oil & gas is a plus.
Knowledge of electric utilities, power systems, electricity markets, grid infrastructure, or utility operations is a plus. Background or demonstrated interest in deep tech and technically complex industries is a plus. Strong interest and passion for energy, technology, innovation, and venture investing. Advanced problem-solving skills and the ability to think strategically, analytically, and creatively.
Highly organized, with a demonstrated ability to meet tight deadlines while maintaining consistent accuracy and attention to detail. Proficiency in Google Docs, MS Office, CRMs, project management tools, etc. Intermediate spreadsheet experience, including formulas, dashboards, charts, pivots, and analysis. SOFT SKILLS Self-motivated and driven; proven ability to work independently, prioritize work, and achieve results.
Exceptional interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to communicate with C-suite executives. Collaborative and diplomatic, with the ability to partner cross-functionally with stakeholders across multiple offices. Comfortable operating in a role with a degree of ambiguity that requires proactive analysis and action.
Strong desire to continually learn and grow professionally, with the curiosity to understand complex technologies, industries, and business models.
