Our client, a world-leading pharmaceutical company, is looking for a Senior Software Engineer (Python) to join a team building cloud-native scientific platforms that accelerate drug discovery. This is an opportunity to work at the intersection of software engineering, cloud technologies, scientific computing, and life sciences, developing scalable platforms that process petabytes of multi-omics, imaging, chemistry, and safety data used by scientists worldwide.
You'll collaborate closely with software engineers, bioinformaticians, data scientists, and research teams to build highly scalable applications, distributed data processing workflows, and cloud-native services supporting cutting-edge biomedical research.
Key Responsibilities
Software Engineering Design and develop software solutions supporting scientific research and drug discovery. Build cloud-native applications, engineering tools, and backend services using Python. Develop scalable microservices and APIs for scientific data processing, analysis, and visualization. Design robust, maintainable, and high-quality software following engineering best practices.
Participate in architecture decisions and technical design discussions. Scientific Platforms & Data Engineering Develop and maintain analytical workflows processing large-scale scientific datasets. Build distributed data processing solutions supporting bioinformatics and scientific research. Contribute to data ingestion, transformation, ETL pipelines, and scientific data management.
Help improve performance and scalability of high-throughput analytical workflows. Cloud & Platform Engineering Integrate AWS services such as EC2, S3, ECS, Batch, RDS, KMS, and related services into production workflows. Develop Infrastructure as Code using Terraform, Cloud. Formation, or Ansible. Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines using Jenkins or equivalent tooling.
Develop containerized applications using Docker and Kubernetes. Support Linux-based production environments. Scientific Workflow Automation Build, maintain, troubleshoot, and optimize Nextflow pipelines supporting scientific computing workloads. Collaborate with scientists to translate research requirements into robust software solutions.
Improve workflow reliability, reproducibility, and operational efficiency. Technical Leadership Lead technical discussions and mentor junior engineers. Drive engineering best practices across development and DevOps. Collaborate with distributed international teams across engineering and research. Balance technical excellence with business priorities and delivery timelines.
Requirements
5+ years of professional software development experience with Python (preferred). Strong understanding of object-oriented design and software engineering principles Experience developing backend services and microservice architectures Experience designing RESTful APIs (GraphQL is a plus) Scientific Workflow Engineering Hands-on experience with Nextflow is a big plus Experience building, maintaining, debugging, and optimizing production workflows Cloud & DevOps AWS experience including services such as: EC2 S3 ECS Batch RDS IAM KMS Infrastructure as Code: Terraform Cloud.
