** SUMMARY OF POSITION :**


Operates various types of large and valuable heavy-duty equipment to accomplish assigned activities.


** ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS :**

  1. Reports to : Designated supervisor and/or foreman.

  2. Directs : May provide on-the-job supervision to other crew members, especially in the absence of assigned supervisor.

  3. Other : May have contact with other county departments and the general public.

** EXAMPLES OF WORK **:

Essential Duties

Operates heavy and light equipment such as a maintainer, backhoe, bulldozer, motor grader, spreader box, track loader, paddle wheel scraper, trash compactor, or light or heavy truck as required and instructed;

Checks oil, water, fuel, tires, and hydraulic system and performs other routine inspections to ensure vehicle is in proper working condition, and performs routine maintenance;

Provides assistance with and suggestions for increased safety during assigned projects;

Digs holes, compacts, covers, and/or grades solid waste;

Grades, maintains, patches, or resurfaces streets, and flags traffic during repairs;

Cleans drains, culverts, right-of-ways, and ditches;

Collects brush, garbage, and debris;

Loads, transports, and unloads necessary materials for assigned projects;

Performs welding and fabrication when necessary;

Repairs bridges;

Constructs, paints, and installs road signs;

Operates other lighter equipment in process of assigned duties;

May perform light plumbing, maintenance, construction, and/or carpentry duties; and

Performs such other duties as may be assigned.

** REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES :**


Knowledge of***: ***the safe operation of the equipment used; the provisions of the Texas Motor Vehicle code relating to operation of light and heavy motorized equipment; and safety standards in order to prevent hazards.

*Skill to: *operate equipment used effectively and safely; and service and make minor repairs on equipment.

Ability to: read and understand construction and utility diagrams; understand and follow written and oral instructions; work effectively and cooperatively with other county employees and the general public; tolerate outside working conditions, including exposure to adverse weather conditions; and maintain Texas driver's license applicable to job responsibilities and good driving record.

** ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING :**


High School graduation, or its equivalent, and at least one year of experience operating light or heavy equipment;

or sufficient education to read and write, plus at least two years of experience operating light or heavy equipment;

or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

** CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED **:

State of Texas Class B (commercial) driver's license.
