About Action For Mental Health Kenya

Welcome to Action for Mental Health - Kenya (AMH-K), a leading non-governmental organization dedicated to improving the lives of individuals affected by mental illness in Kenya. Based in Kisumu City and operating primarily in western Kenya, AMH-K was founded in the 1990s as St. Francis Development Program, born out of a grassroots movement led by marginalized women in Nyanza. Particularly widows who faced societal stigma and mental health challenges due to the loss of traditional cultural practices. This situation was further exacerbated by the HIV/AIDS crisis. In 2023 adopted the organization its current name, marking a renewed commitment to advancing mental health rights and ensuring access to care for all. Today, AMH-K stands as a leading example of excellence in community-based mental health care, guided by the core values of capacity building, strategic service delivery, advocacy, empowerment, and research. Through innovative programs and strategic partnerships, the organization continues to drive meaningful improvements in mental health outcomes across western Kenya. AMH-K works tirelessly to raise awareness, combat stigma, and provide accessible support for those experiencing mental health challenges. It actively engages individuals living with mental health conditions, as well as their families, caregivers, and other vulnerable groups. By partnering with volunteers, public institutions, and community health systems, AMH-K delivers mental health services that are inclusive, respectful, and empowering.
