In February 1870, the group of nine Sisters from Germany must have been tired after 12 days aboard the Hammonia, a French steamer. Because of anti-Catholic fervor in Germany, the Sisters were exiled from Gurtweil, Germany, and immigrated to the United States. They pursued opportunities offered by American bishops to minister to German immigrants newly arrived in this country.
