About Aequitas Health

Aequitas Health is a third pillar of recognition in medical education — alongside Alpha Omega Alpha (academic scholarship) and the Gold Humanism Honor Society (compassion) — recognizing the medical students who build what doesn't exist to serve the communities that need them most. With 12 chapters across 12 states and more than 250 fellows inducted, it is the first national medical honor society built specifically for community health action in medicine. Fellows don't just join — they build. Every fellow completes a health-focused project addressing a real need in a real community, designed with community partners and built to sustain beyond a single academic year. Projects include tribal health infrastructure, pediatric vision screening in rural communities, bilingual medication adherence programs, and menstrual equity initiatives. The Aequitas Health Journal has published 15 articles across 5 volumes (2021–2025), all editorially reviewed. The Annual National Conference, now in its third year, has hosted 7 distinguished speakers from organizations including Vizient, the VA, Menlo Ventures, UPenn, UAMS, and Grapevine Health. The Grant Program awards competitive funding to student-led community health projects, with 7 recipients funded across 2 cycles. The organization runs on radical efficiency: volunteer-run, zero paid staff, operating under $5,000 per year. Annual chapter fee: $100. Cost to students: $0. Ever. In 2023, Aequitas Health received the McNulty Catalyst Award from the John P. McNulty Prize at the Aspen Institute, recognizing what a lean, volunteer-driven organization can accomplish.
