About African Center for Career Enhancement and Skills Support (ACCESS)

ACCESS-project addresses the paradox situation that a growing and better formal education does not improve access to the labour market but rather contributes to increase the unemployment rates among university graduates in Africa. This is driven mainly by four factors: university education is still widely considered as both, a requirement and possibility to social mobility; a high share of private household spending goes into the facilitation of higher education for selected family members; the expectations of the protagonists towards the state or other possible employers concerning payment and recruiting are often unrealistic and inflexible; and finally, graduates are often not fit for a globalising labour market as the required skills are not part of the repertoire learned at the respective universities. ACCESS project is implemented under the DAAD EXCEED Initiative by a consortium of 7 Universities in Germany, Ghana, Nigeria, Nigeria, Benin, Rwanda and Tunisia. The project is being implemented under four main pillar, to wit, Employability research, Capacity building, University Business Linkages and Entrepreneurship Promotion at HEIs.
