About American Nicaraguan School

The American Nicaraguan School (ANS) is a non-profit, non-sectarian, coeducational day school founded in 1944 to provide a college preparatory American educational program from Nursery (Kindergarten age 3) through Grade 12 for students of all nationalities. The School is governed by a 7 member Board of Directors, with 6 members elected by school parents, and one member appointed by the U.S. Embassy. The school community includes members of the diplomatic corps, foreign and local businesses, Nicaraguan government and various international assistance groups working in Nicaragua. The ANS Mission is to provide its multicultural student community with a US-accredited college preparatory program, based on democratic and universal values, that develops critical thinkers and ethical individuals capable of realizing their leadership potential by making meaningful contributions to society. As an AdvancED accredited institution, ANS follows a US-based curriculum while also providing students the opportunity of obtaining the Nicaraguan Bachillerato Diploma. English is the language of instruction through all grade levels, starting in Kinder 3. An innovative approach to education starts early at ANS through Balanced Literacy, Singapore Math and Science Fusion being implemented in the Early Learning Center and Elementary School. Middle School and High School students incorporate technology use in their lessons through the One-to-One Laptop Program. Secondary School students apply their skills through involvement in both curricula and extra-curricular activities. Students challenge themselves by taking classes from the Global Studies Academy Program, picking up a third or fourth language, as well as choosing from 16 academically diverse AP courses, adding to their preparation for attending colleges and universities in the United States and around the world.
