About Angkor Photo Festival & Workshops

The Angkor Photo Festival & Workshops (APFW) was launched in 2005 as a non-profit organisation with a key purpose: to offer photographers in Asia affordable and accessible opportunities for professional development and growth. We have remained committed to this mission over the years, while adapting to the evolving needs of our community and the changing landscape of photography. Based in Siem Reap, Cambodia, the APFW is Southeast Asia’s oldest established international photography event. Our regular annual programme consists of the Angkor Photo Workshops for Asian photographers and the Angkor Photo Festival, which features exhibitions, projection screenings, talks and an array of other activities to engage visitors and the general public. Our programmes are firmly non-commercial and egalitarian. At APFW, we have never just been about photography – what is important is how it can help us engage with the real world in a useful, meaningful manner. We embrace explorations and experimentation, potentially opening up new approaches to the medium. Across our activities, we assume an autonomous framework to teaching and discussing photography to encourage the development of each individual’s unique artistic voice and vision. Over the years, we have been privileged to become a vital gathering space for practitioners from across Asia, creating a close-knit community of festival attendees and workshop alumni from various cultures, backgrounds and practices. To further enhance collaboration and open exchange amongst this diverse gathering of photographers, we design our events to be informal and non-hierarchical. The sense of solidarity that emerges from being part of a wider community with shared beliefs and interests is an invaluable asset for photographers in the region. Through this connection, they can access peer support and advice, an outlet to share their struggles, and a resource for collaboration and mutual inspiration.
