About Associated Press Sports Editors (APSE)
The Associated Press Sports Editors (APSE) is a national organization of sports editors and digital sports media leaders committed to advancing the profession of sports journalism. Since our founding in 1974 — when 126 editors gathered in New York City — we’ve grown into a powerful force for professional development, ethical standards, and industry innovation. Our early efforts led a national movement to elevate sports journalism across all platforms. Today, APSE empowers members through year-round workshops, leadership development, and our annual summer conference. Our cornerstone programs include: • The APSE Contest – Recognizing the best in sports writing, projects, and digital presentation • The Red Smith Award – The highest individual honor in sports journalism • The Diversity Fellowship and Sports Journalism Institute – Cultivating the next generation of journalists through mentoring, training, and opportunity We also maintain strong partnerships with major sports leagues and organizations like the NCAA and U.S. Olympic Committee to advocate for access, equity, and journalistic standards. From metro newspapers to digital startups, APSE is the home for anyone serious about sports media. If you believe in great storytelling, bold leadership, and a better future for journalism, you belong here.
