Saurashtra region is known to have a high incidence of kidney problems. The need for specialized kidney hospitals in Saurashtra was evident as more than 50 percent of patients at previously established kidney hospitals in Gujrat belonged to the Saurashtra region. Dr. Pradip Kansagra, then a practicing urologist conceived the idea of having tertiary care kidney hospital at Rajkot. A group of philanthropic people consisting of Late. Shree Devjibhai Patel, Shree Rameshbhai Patel, Shree Jayantibhai Faldu, and Dr. Vivek Joshi joined hands to form a core group and founded “Saurashtra Kidney Research Institute”, a registered charitable trust. Devjibhai Patel was unanimously elected chairman of the trust and it was decided to build an ultra-modern, comprehensive kidney hospital at Rajkot with a mission to provide “Quality Care at an affordable price”. Shree Bhagwanjibhai T. Savani from Kenya generously donated Rs. One Crore to lead from the front. The idea of such a hospital received overwhelming support from the society and donations started flouring with great efforts by Dr. Pradip Kansagra and help from Shree Keshubhai Patel & Shree Vajubhai Vala, Government of Gujarat generously allotted 3 acres of land for this project. Construction started in late 1998 with Bhumipoojan by then Chief Minister of Gujarat Shree Keshubhai Patel and completed by December 2002. The hospital was formally inaugurated on 2nd February 2003.Because of unavoidable circumstances, Dr. Pradip Kansagra had to migrate to the USA at the time of the inauguration. But in his absence Shree Rameshbhai Patel, Shree Jayantibhai Faldu & Dr. Vivek Joshi continued to put in hard work to bring the hospital to the forefront. With their effort, B.T. Savani Kidney Hospital expanded its wings and became a teaching institute with DNB (Urology), DNB (Nephrology), GNM Nursing School, DMLT, and CCDT course with kidney transplantation program.
