Processed coal weighs less and possesses a higher heating value, improving power plant efficiency so less material is required to achieve the same energy output. This lowers transportation costs from mine to market and leads to a reduction in total emissions of acid rain pollutants, particulate matter, and greenhouse gas emissions.
