About Botanographia

Botanographia is a botanical fine art print practice exploring the intersection of photography, botanical study and contemporary art. Co-founded by photographer Duncan Smith and Andrea Semas, the practice brings together decades of still-life expertise with a considered approach to sustainability, production and long-term value. At its core, Botanographia is shaped by Duncan’s extensive career across advertising, design and marketing communications, where he has worked with global brands with a specialisation in still life, portraiture and architectural photography. Botanographia is not a departure from this work, but an expansion of it. Working from his studio in Cambridgeshire, the practice focuses on botanical still life as a form of observation and artistic expression. Each subject is grown, sourced or sustainably acquired and photographed with an emphasis on structure, detail and presence. The process is considered and iterative, allowing each composition to emerge through observation and refinement. Alongside the artistic practice, Botanographia is built on a clear and practical approach to sustainability. Production is based in the UK and Germany, using print-on-demand methods, archival materials and responsibly sourced papers to reduce waste and ensure longevity. Prints are available as open and limited editions, forming an evolving archive of botanical work shaped by seasonality rather than trend. Botanographia is created for collectors, designers and those seeking a more considered relationship with the visual environments they inhabit.
