About Cal Hiking and Outdoors Society

CHAOS is a student run outdoors club with over 1000 members and a long tradition of getting Cal students outside. We provide our members with both the community and the gear to make their outdoor dreams come true. Our members have been all over the world: summiting mountains, completing difficult thru hikes, biking through desolation, and descending canyons. Our gear shed is full of most of the equipment necessary for hiking, backpacking, camping, and other outdoor adventures. And where we lack in gear, we make up for in a network of hundreds of outdoor enthusiasts willing to lend and trade their own equipment. Recently, we started an Introduction to Backpacking course for UC Berkeley undergraduates. In this course, students learn all of the essentials for safely exploring the California wilderness and beyond. In addition to this class, we have dedicated trip leaders responsible for organizing and facilitating backpacking trips throughout the year. These hobbies can be deceptively expensive, but our goal is simple: to make the outdoors as accessible as possible.
