About Cavan and Leitrim Railway Museum
The Cavan and Leitrim Railway Museum operates a 1km section of narrow gauge railway line along the long closed Cavan and Leitrim Railway that originally opened in 1887, closing in 1959. The museum is run completely by volunteers and is a local community non-profit group. The museum has restored and is based at the original Cavan and Leitrim station building at Dromod. The volunteers have restored a section of the railway line from nothing, they laid track , sleepers and everything that is there today themselves. We have restored and preserved a host of railway artefacts including a 1908 built steam locomotive "Nancy", unique Tralee and Dingle Light Railway carriages dating from the 1890's. There is also a host of unique transport exhibits for the public to access. The museum also contains a collection of Bord na Mona heritage diesel locomotives, many of which are restored or undergoing restoration.
