About Centre for Underwater Archaeology Bulgaria

The Centre for Underwater Archaeology (CUA) is a public cultural institute under the Bulgarian Ministry of Culture, dedicated to the research, preservation, and promotion of underwater cultural heritage in Bulgaria and the Black Sea region. Founded in 1978 and based in Sozopol, the CUA is the only specialised institution in Bulgaria focused on underwater archaeology. Its work spans prehistoric submerged settlements, ancient ports, sunken ships, and other archaeological sites hidden beneath the sea, rivers, and lakes. CUA conducts scientific surveys, excavations, and interdisciplinary research in collaboration with national and international partners. The Centre also develops conservation strategies for underwater finds and participates in policy-making efforts for heritage protection. As a recognized training hub, CUA hosts field schools, workshops, and educational programmes for students, professionals, and divers from around the world. CUA’s mission combines academic excellence, public outreach, and international cooperation. Through exhibitions, publications, and digital storytelling, the Centre brings to light the stories of our submerged past and raises awareness about the importance of protecting it for future generations. CUA is actively engaged in projects supported by the EU and UNESCO and is working toward becoming a regional centre for underwater cultural heritage in South-East Europe under the auspices of UNESCO.
