About Civic Heart Community Services

Founded in 1989 as Families Under Urban and Social Attack (FUUSA), and later known as Change Happens!, Civic Heart Community Services brings a 37-year history of serving vulnerable and disadvantaged populations and creating meaningful, life-changing impact across Houston. What began as a single program has grown into a comprehensive organization operating more than 15 programs with a team of 30 employees. Today, Civic Heart serves more than 65,000 individuals annually through a broad continuum of services, including prevention education, life-skills training, and alternative activities for more than 7,000 youth ages 6 to 17; after-school and summer enrichment programming for over 150 youth each year; housing support for 72 individuals experiencing homelessness; enrollment assistance helping more than 2,000 families access health insurance; and education, workforce training, and employment connections for 200 low-income adults. Our work also supports justice-involved youth by reducing recidivism and improving long-term outcomes. Through our VOICES program, we have enrolled more than 100 justice-involved girls, with 80 percent remaining offense-free since enrollment. Civic Heart takes a holistic approach to service delivery, addressing the social determinants of health and positioning the organization to effectively support individuals and families experiencing the greatest disparities in our community.
