About Departamento de Economia (FCS), Universidad de la Republica

The UdelaR created in 1988 the Research and Postgraduate Center in Social Science (CEIPOS), as a part of a process aiming at strengthening the interaction between social disciplines while developing teaching at a postgraduate level. In 1989 the first experimental courses were taught that later led to the design and implementation of the Master’s Program in International Economics currently offered by dECON. The restructuring process led to the creation in 1991 of the Faculty of Social Science (FCS) which integrated the former CEIPOS. The Departamento de Economía (dECON) was created then to concentrate teaching and research activities in Economics within FCS. It is in charge of all economics undergraduate teaching, within the degrees in Political Science, Sociology and Social Work offered by FCS. At postgraduate level it is responsible for the Masters Program in International Economics and offers several Diplomas and Certificates. Research at dECON is organized by areas that respond to sub disciplines, including international trade, econometrics, labor economics, productive internationalization and business strategy, macroeconomics and finance, industrial organization and economic regulation and topics in microeconomics. This structure does not exclude the development of research projects around relevant issues involving more than one area. dECON stimulates projects, seminars or other initiatives with inter disciplinary approaches.
