About EIPCM European Institute for Participatory Media

The European Institute for Participatory Media is a non-profit research organisation that promotes and develops participatory systems and digital innovations addressing societal challenges and harnessing emerging digital technologies such as AI. We operate as a network institute with headquarters and a core team in Berlin and a network of partners across Europe. In doing so we conduct applied research in user-centred and trans-disciplinary way to address challenges in the areas of sustainability, climate change, social innovation or Responsible AI. Our projects connect citizens, academia, public organizations, businesses, and civil society. Our expertise includes human-centred design of socio-technical systems, visualization, gamification, Human-centred AI and Responsible AI. This includes the development of innovative approaches to support AI Literacy and the reflective design of AI systems to harness benefits and alleviate risks and harms of its misuse. Our work also includes new approaches to broad AI capacity building (e.g. iKIDO project), intelligent persuasive systems for behavioural change and sustainability (enCOMPASS, SmartH2O, POWER), collective intelligence for social tasks (CHEST) and innovative solutions using explainable AI for science communication (e.g. projects Reflective AI and XAI4COVID). The institute‘s projects have been featured by the EU Commission on the EU Innovation Radar. We have successfully performed a number of projects funded by the European Commission, German Federal Government and private foundations such as the Volkswagen Foundation or the Robert Bosch Foundation.
