About Ekukhanyeni Relief Project

Ekukhanyeni is a community-rooted organisation working in informal settlements in Johannesburg’s deep south, where formal systems of early childhood development have historically been absent. Since 2005, we have played a central role in building and stabilising early childhood development in these communities, working across both infrastructure and workforce. We strengthen community-based systems of care by developing ECD centres as reliable community infrastructure, advancing women practitioners as part of the ECD workforce, and improving the quality and consistency of early learning environments. Our work sits at the intersection of early childhood development, workforce development, and community resilience, grounded in long-term presence in communities where sustained systems-building is required. We are committed to long-term partnerships that recognise the importance of strengthening systems, not only programmes, and that invest in early childhood development as a foundation for sustainable community development.
