About EL CENTRAL Hispanic News
Founded in 1988, EL CENTRAL Hispanic News is Michigan’s oldest and largest bilingual (English/Spanish) weekly newspaper, proudly serving Southeast Michigan’s Hispanic and Latino communities for 37 years. Our mission is to inform, celebrate, and empower our community through original bilingual journalism that highlights the people, culture, and issues shaping Metro Detroit’s Latino experience. Now owned and operated by Eva Garza Dewaelsche and Robert Dewaelsche under Garza-Dewaelsche Enterprises, Inc., EL CENTRAL is building on its trusted legacy while modernizing for the future. With a renewed focus on digital transformation, we are expanding our reach through a new website, active social media platforms, and community-centered storytelling. We are deeply committed to mentoring and publishing the work of emerging BIPOC journalists and photojournalists, partnering with organizations such as the Race and Justice Reporting Initiative at Wayne State University’s Damon J. Keith Center for Civil Rights, Planet Detroit, and the Detroit Writing Room. These collaborations allow us to provide professional development opportunities while expanding coverage on critical issues such as environmental justice, economic inclusion, education, and culture. Our coverage spans Metro Detroit, including Wayne, Oakland, and Macomb Counties, with a special focus on Southwest Detroit, home to one of Michigan’s largest and most vibrant Hispanic/Latino populations. For more than three decades, EL CENTRAL has remained a trusted bilingual source for local stories that matter, connecting generations, inspiring pride, and building bridges across cultures.
