About Engineering Digital Twins
Engineering Digital Twins (EDT) is a national research programme funded by France 2030 (ANR-25-APJN-0001), led by Inria under the direction of Pascale Vicat-Blanc and Benoît Combemale. Our mission: to build the science of Engineering Digital Twins. Digital twins are transforming the way we design, operate, and optimise physical systems — from energy networks to territories, from vessels to bioreactors. Yet their engineering remains an open challenge: how do we hybridise physical models and AI? How do we ensure their reliability? How do we make them interoperate at scale? EDT tackles these fundamental questions through 5 focused research projects: → CATALYST — Model hybridisation & management → DTCompose — Architecture, composability & interoperability → TwinOps — Methodology, development lifecycle & languages → Synchronic — Digital coupling & gateway → GENUINE — Human–Digital Twin interactions The programme draws on 40+ real-world use cases spanning energy, industry, space, geography, biology, and environment — contributed by a consortium including Inria, CEA, CNRS, IGN, IFPEN, INRAE, IMT, CNES, CETIM and an industrial Usage Council. EDT is developing Artemis, an open-source platform for Engineering Digital Twins, and training the next generation of researchers through an ambitious doctoral programme.
