About First Nations Health Directors Association

Empowering Health Directors. Transforming First Nations health. Created by Health Directors, for Health Directors – the purpose of the First Nations Health Directors Association (FNHDA) is to build a better health system from the ground up. The FNHDA was officially established in 2010 in response to Health Director demand to create a community and circle of support to share stories, wise practices and identify common trends and priorities. Who are Health Directors? Health Directors lead the planning, delivery, and oversight of health and wellness services and programs in First Nations Communities across BC, including urban, rural, and remote areas. They are integral to community health and wellness and also responsible for addressing the unique needs of individuals and families within their Nations. Our four Governance Partners – Three Pillars The FNHDA is one of four governance partners within the made-in-BC Health Governance Structure created by Chiefs and leaders through the 2011 Consensus Paper and Resolution: BC First Nations Perspectives on a New Health Governance. Our Association works alongside the First Nations Health Authority, which is responsible for the planning, management, delivery, and funding of health programs, and the First Nations Health Council, which provides political leadership to advance Tripartite commitments and support health priorities of BC First Nations. Together, the three partners share a common vision for Healthy, Self-Determining and Vibrant BC First Nation Children, Families and Communities. This Health Governance Structure is a first of its kind in Canada – and one of only a few in the world. The FNHDA is the only association of its kind in Canada, created by First Nations Health Directors to support them in their health leadership roles.
