About Frauenmuseum Hittisau

The Frauenmuseum Hittisau located in the Bregenzerwald, a rural region between Munich, Zurich and Innsbruck, was founded in the year 2000. It is Austria’s only women’s museum and the only one of its kind worldwide set in the countryside. It collects, documents, preserves, researches and disseminates women's history and culture. It considers itself as a place of encounter and discussion and always integrates contemporary art into its cultural-historical exhibitions. Hittisau’s Women’s Museum focuses on participation and inclusion and wants to facilitate lifelong, intergenerational learning. It is based on the support of its cultural narrators. Women of different ages and educational backgrounds commit themselves to the museum and directly interact with the public. Their right to speak is not bound to academic education or a position in the organisation chart but based on intensive, serious and deep engagement with the themes essential to the museum. In 2017, the Women's Museum Hittisau received the Austrian Museum Award.
