About Friends of Dialysis Nonprofit
Friends of Dialysis (FOD) Where community meets care. Founded by Dr. Alaa’i Alshabrawy, Friends of Dialysis is a nonprofit organization dedicated to creating a sense of welcome and belonging for dialysis patients through empathy, education, and connection. We unite students, healthcare professionals, and community members to improve the dialysis experience and raise awareness about kidney health. Our Projects 💙 Dialysis Volunteering Dialysis treatments often last several hours, multiple times a week — a physically and emotionally draining process for patients and their families. Our volunteers provide comfort, conversation, and companionship through structured visits and activities that bring a sense of humanity and warmth to the treatment setting. 📚 Kidney Health Education Program Our educational initiative spans a three-phase program — including the FOD Podcast, newsletters, and a high school education curriculum — to teach youth about chronic kidney disease, dialysis, and health disparities. The program empowers students to become informed advocates and future volunteers in kidney health. 🎁 Renal Care Kits To bring comfort and care beyond conversation, FOD members deliver personalized renal care kits to dialysis patients. These include small but meaningful items — games, lotions, and essential materials — to help brighten long treatment days and foster connection.
