About Geotechnical Consulting Group
Geotechnical Consulting Group (GCG) is one of the world’s leading independent geotechnical engineering consultancies, recognised for delivering innovative, research driven solutions to complex ground engineering challenges. Founded in 1983 by Professor Lord Robert Mair, Professor David Hight and the late Professor Peter Vaughan, GCG operates as an independent LLP supported by a highly skilled team of consultants who bring extensive experience across all areas of geotechnical engineering. Our team includes internationally respected leaders of the profession, with numerous prestigious named lecturers—such as Rankine, Glossop, Géotechnique, Harding, William Smith Medal and Terzaghi lecturers—and Fellows of the Royal Academy of Engineering and the Royal Society. Over 40+ years, we have advised more than 300+ clients in 50+ countries, supporting industry and government with expertise spanning soil and rock behaviour, design review, construction support, risk assessment and complex problem solving. Our practice integrates applied and fundamental research, ensuring our advice reflects the latest global developments in geotechnical theory and design. We maintain strong partnerships with leading universities—including Imperial College, Cambridge, Oxford, Dundee, Barcelona, Kobe, Cornell and Berkeley—to bring state of the art research into engineering practice. GCG provides specialist services across the full project lifecycle: ground interpretation at tender stage, design optimisation, construction stage troubleshooting, alternative solutions, and expert input on claims and forensic investigations. Our clients include civil and structural engineers, government bodies and specialist geotechnical contractors. We are active members of the British Tunnelling Society (BTS), British Geotechnical Association (BGA), AGS and CIRIA, contributing to industry best practice and advancing the profession.
