About Get a Financial Life (GFL) NYC
What do New York City’s high school students need to know about money—and what do they want to know? Over the span of a year, we posed these questions to hundreds of people from all five boroughs, including teachers, principals, and nonprofit leaders. And crucially, we also asked students themselves. The result is Get a Financial Life NYC (GFL NYC), an open-source 10-lesson money curriculum for NYC’s 11th and 12th graders. Developed alongside the Heckscher Foundation for Children, a leading nonprofit for NYC education, the curriculum’s ready-to-use lesson plans can be taught in 10 hours, meet New York State’s personal finance requirements for grades 9-12, and can be incorporated into any existing class. The topics covered are what you’d expect: Budgeting, Saving in a Bank, Credit, Debit Cards, Smart Spending, Investing & Building Wealth, College & Credentials, Working, and Health Insurance. But the lessons are tailored specifically to the money decisions made by New York teens in high school—from college advice about the CUNY system (where 57% of NYC public high schoolers attend college) to tips on setting up direct deposit for a Summer Youth Employment Program paycheck. Each lesson pinpoints what kids need to know now. NYC is the the largest public school system in the world, and its hundreds of thousands of students deserve to know about money. GFL NYC provides an easily embeddable solution: a curriculum that’s relevant and actionable, characteristics which economists have long said make financial literacy stick. And, most importantly, which NYC high schoolers want.
