About Green Book For Health
The Green Book for Health (GBFH) is a national, community-driven initiative designed to empower Black Americans in identifying and sharing safe, equitable healthcare providers. GBFH is part of Just Equity for Health, a multi-pronged initiative founded by Dr. Stella Safo that transforms healthcare by centering and supporting those who have been historically overlooked. GBFH is inspired by Victor Hugo Green’s 1936 Negro Motorist Green-Book, which provided a lifeline of safety and guidance for Black travelers during the Jim Crow era. Today, the GBFH channels that same spirit to address modern systemic inequities, high morbidity rates, and discrimination within the medical system. The project provides essential support through two primary components: a Resource Guide and a Community Guide. The Resource Guide offers practical tools for navigating the health system, engaging efficiently with providers, and addressing discriminatory care. The Community Guide serves as a protected online platform where community members share testimonials and reviews regarding local health centers and clinicians. By aggregating these lived experiences and expert insights, the GBFH seeks to restore agency to individuals who feel marginalized or unheard. Ultimately, the initiative aims to hold problematic healthcare entities accountable and drive them toward providing improved, culturally responsive care for the Black population.
