About Groundwater for Resilience Project - Somaliland

The Groundwater for Resilience Project (GW4R), locally known as Abaar-tire, is a regional project focused on the sustainable development and management of groundwater resources across the Horn of Africa ( Ethiopia, Kenya, Somaliland and Somalia, Djibouti & Sudan). The Project Development Objective (PDO) is to enhance sustainable access to and management of groundwater resources in the borderland areas of the Horn of Africa. The project is structured around three core components: 1. Delivery of inclusive groundwater services in priority areas; 2. Groundwater information and institutional strengthening at national and regional levels; and 3. Support for project management, knowledge development, and operational coordination. In Somaliland, implementation commenced in 2023 and remains ongoing. The project is expected to benefit approximately 30,000 people, including rural communities, pastoralists and livestock owners.
